What are the Different Kinds of Pneumonia?

There are actually two different kinds of this lung infection; the bacterial and viral pneumonia.

If your baby is experiencing high fever, rapid breathing, and coughing and she seems very ill and won’t eat, she may have bacterial pneumonia. You have to check for flaring nostrils or inspect her chest sinking in as she breathes. She may have bluish lips or nails, and faster pulse. She may be weak, vomit, and have diarrhea. The usual cause of bacterial pneumonia is Streptococcus pneumonia, but the other strep bacteria can cause pneumonia too, like the Staphylococcus aureus and Chlamydia pneumonia.

Typically, viral pneumonia starts out as a cold then the symptoms slowly and gradually gets worse. Your baby will have a very high fever with worsening cough, rapid breathing, and wheezing. Just like bacterial pneumonia, your baby may be weak, vomit, or may have diarrhea.  Compared to bacterial, viral pneumonia is usually less severe but can make your baby more susceptible to the bacterial form of the disease.
