Maori Matariki in New Zealand

What is Matariki?

Matariki is also known as Pleiades star cluster. It's a Maori name for The Seven Sisters or a group of stars. It is referred to us as the traditional new year of the Maori. It is marked by the rise of Matariki which can be seen in the last days of May, and the next new moon which can be sighted on June. Matariki has two meanings, Mata riki (tiny eyes) and Mata ariki (eyes of God), both referring to the tiny constellation of stars.

It is celebrated by planting plants and crops which symbolizes new beginnings. Exhibition of Maori arts, cultural dances, singing, family gatherings, recycling awareness, and much more are done during the celebration. Traditional food called Hangi is also prepared and served for families and friends.
