Kiko's Killer Jailed for 16 Years
Yongxin Li was sentenced at Auckland High Court yesterday, May 27, 2011 to life in prison with a minimum non-parole period of 16 years. He was also sentenced to 7 years, to be served concurrently, for aggravated robbery.
Jiayi Li, was known to her friends as Kiko, was found dead in the boot of her car in Hamilton on June 2 last year. She died having 22 stabs in her body. The killer stole her eftpos card after the murder and tried to withdraw money from ATM machines. It was captured by CCTV.
Li had a one-way ticket to China booked, when the Police had caught up to him.
Kiko's father, Chang Kui Li, had described how their daughter's loss affect their business and daily lives. He said in the court today that his wife has been washing her face with tears everyday. He also said that he was unable to concentrate on his business and shut himself up in his home.
"The loss of my daughter has plunged my life to the bottom."
"The murder was planned over the days," Crown prosecutor Aaron Perkins said. Yongxin Li showed "enthusiasm" for the killing and planned the date of the murder.
David Niven, Li's lawyer told the court that his client was only 18 when the murder took place. He had pleaded guilty at an early opportunity and had shown remorse. Mr. Niven said that there's no sophistication in the planning of the crime.
"It was planned but it was a foolish exercise."
Justice Whata took Li's age and his early plea into account. It is particularly significant that Li have not put Kiko's family through the further pain and expense of trial. Justice Whata described the murder as having "a high degree of depravity."
