Virgin Blue Attendant Locked a Tot in the Overhead Compartment

Nathalie Williamson, her husband, and their 17 month old son were on board Virgin Blue flight from Fiji to Sydney when the flight attendant picked up her son and put in the overhead locker and latched it. The tot was in there for 10 seconds in complete darkness. A quite fun way to play peek-a-boo for some, but not for Ms. Williamson.

Virgin has conducted a thorough investigation of the incident and they have subsequently terminated the flight attendant involved.

The airline offered Ms. Williamson three free flights, but she said she is too shaken by the experience to redeem them.

Her husband was standing one meter behind her son, Riley when the incident happened. She stood up, people were laughing, and she said "Get my son out of there now."

"I was devastated. I am absolutely devastated."

"I was crying. My husband was in shock. For days on end I was crying," she said.

"The manager on board came up to me later and said, "I need you to complain. I need you to do something, write or ring. Do whatever you can," she said.

According to Ms. Williamson, Riley who's 20 months now, is suffering from anxiety and withdrawal. They have seen various specialist since the incident.

Virgin said, they took the incident seriously. The top priority of Virgin Blue is the safety of their guests and they do not tolerate any breaches.

"We have expressed our sincerest apologies to the guests and have provided them with a credit for the full amount of the two return flights," the spokeswoman said.
