Shinmoedake Volcano Erupts

JAPAN - Shinmoedake volcano in southwestern Japan erupted after lying dormant for a couple of weeks. The Japanese weather  agency has reported that the volcano began sending ashes and rocks up to four kilometers up in the air. This another disaster happened even as the country struggled to recover Sunday from a catastrophic earthquake and tsunami.

The volcano is in Kyushu Island,  about 950 miles from the epicenter of Friday's 8.9 magnitude earthquake.

It was not vivid if the eruption was the direct result of the earthquake. Japan lies on the "ring of fire,"  a seismically active zone where earthquakes and volcanic eruptions are common.

The 1421 meter Shinmoedake volcano last erupted on January 19, two years ago. There had not been any major activity since then. The volcanologist had warned that a "lava dome" was growing inside the volcano crater, although they were uncertain when or if it would erupt. Authorities have maintained a volcano warning at a level of three of five, restricting access to the entire mountain.

Shinmoedake  volcano erupted on Sunday, which was the biggest activity of the volcano in 52 years. This caused a massive destruction and panic across the country. Hundreds of people fled the area as the volcano spewed debris, more than 6,000 feet in the air, BBC reports.
